Addiction Management Coaching


Our addiction management coaching program is based on best practice models for peer-based support and reflects proven, field-tested tools and techniques.

Our coaching program prepares qualified peers with a shared lived experience to support persons with the disease. We've also developed a distinct coaching program for loved ones of addiction sufferers. Coaches for loved ones are also peers, having had a close family member or friend directly impacted by addiction.

Our training curriculum is evidence-based. It mirrors the most effective practices in peer support to manage sustained behavior change for people with chronic diseases and other conditions.

Core Functions

Our training prepares our addiction management coaches to fully address the four core functions of peer support:

  1. Assistance in daily management;
  2. Social and emotional support;
  3. Linkages to clinic care and community resources; and 
  4. Ongoing support extended over time.

Our coaches receive ongoing training and support to ensure they are the best prepared and their personal wellness is maintained.The following outlines the scope of our addiction management coaching program.

Core Competencies

Category 1:  Adheres to privacy and confidentiality rules
     a. Follows laws, policies and procedures concerning protected health information/confidentiality

     a.  Develops and maintains up-to-date information about community resources and services

Category 11: Assists peers in building recovery capital
     a.  Educates peers about the role of recovery capital in wellness
     b.  Focuses peer on gaps in recovery capital to manage risks to wellness
Category 12: Helps peers to manage crises
     a.  Recognizes signs of distress and threats to safety among peers and in their environments
     b.  Provides reassurance to peers in distress
     c.  Strives to create a safe space when meeting with peers
Category 13: Values communication
     a.  Uses respectful, non-stigmatizing person-first wellness language in written and verbal interactions with peers, loved ones, community members and others
     b.  Uses active listening skills
     c.  Clarifies their understanding of information when in doubt of the meaning
Category 14: Supports effective use of data
     a.  Educates peers about the value of data collection
     b.  Documents information as required by program policies and procedures
     c.  Collects client data on time and in keeping with required protocols
     d.  Applies data-driven learning to coaching techniques
Category 15: Practices self-care
     a.  Recognizes when health may compromise ability to work
     b.  Acknowledges that personal wellness is a primary responsibility
     c.  Sets boundaries between work and personal life
Category 16: Supports collaboration and teamwork
     a.  Works together with other colleagues to enhance the provision of services and supports
     b.  Assertively engages providers from mental health services, addiction services and healthcare to meet the needs of peers
     c.  Coordinates efforts with healthcare providers to enhance the health and wellness of peers
     d.  Partners with community members and organizations to strengthen opportunities for peers
     e.  Strives to resolve conflicts in relationships with peers and others in their support network

Program Design

Application & Qualification

All coach candidates, whether paid staff or volunteer, complete the same application and training process. All coach candidates must complete a background check, provide three references and complete an interview.

Coaches are also required to complete Confidentiality and Commitment Agreements.


All coach candidates must complete our 32-hour training program. The training is a mix of web-based, classroom, and shadowing. 

  • 16 hours of online content. 
  • 8 hours of classroom lecture and scenario exercises.
  • 8 hours of shadowing one or multiple coaches.


The final step in the training is a 50 question test. Candidates must answer 75% correctly. Once all elements of the training are satisfied, the coaching candidate is deemed a Certified Face It TOGETHER Addiction Management Coach.

Continuing Ed

In order to maintain certification and continue working or serving Face It TOGETHER as an addiction management coach, all coaches must complete quarterly continuing education courses. These courses are designed to add depth and breadth of knowledge and competency on issues such as: crisis management, privacy and confidentiality (HIPAA), use of technology, latest research relating to peer coaching, and latest standards and practices of evidenced based techniques (motivational interviewing, CRAFT, etc.). 



All new addiction management coaches are placed on a 90-day probation. At the end of the probation period, the lead addiction management coach (and/or executive director) reviews the coach’s experience, performance, and personal wellness. All coaches are directly supervised by a lead coach. Each division or affiliate conducts (at least) bi-weekly staff meetings dedicated to the review of client cases and scenarios. All coaches are required to sit one-on-one with their lead coach to review their experience, performance, and personal wellness — similar to the 90-day probationary review.
